New Taca in Flight Menu

I was delighted to see on the internet that the two segments of my recent TACA flight showed that a meal was to be served. Of course airline food is not usually something to write home about. On flight TACA seemed proud to annouce their new menu. The key featured seemed to be that there is a $5 fee for it! And, the sandwishes are hardly a meal. They could at least increase the quality of the food when they start nickle and diming you over it. Or, even have a premium item for $10 or $15 for those who want to pig out on something decent. Of course they should also be honest and note on their website that the on flight meal is an extra 5 bucks per flight segment! The next special email I get from them will go promptly in the trash box unread.

Why the French Fries in Costa Rica are Disgusting!

While it may be true that the Weather is Always Good in Costa Rica, it is almost universally true that the french fries are NOT!

This is the problem. Open your restautrant and turn on the deep fryer. Ok, its hot (not that you would actually measure the temperature). Now you turn it off.

Wait for a customer to order fries. Dump the frozen fries in and then turn it back on. Ok, you get hot, greasy mushy fries. Now turn the fryer off till next time.

Now, take a clue from McDonalds. Figure out the exact temperature that makes the best fries. Then keep your grease heated to that temperature for the entire time you are open!

Now you will have great french fries and happy customers. The small investment in gas or electrity to keep the grease hot might be a small price to pay for happier customers.

Use fresh potatoes and you'll be well on the path to coming out of the third world!

Are you looking for a TERRIFIC Spanish tutor?

My favorite Spanish teacher is leaving her full-time job teaching at a Spanish language school because she's been working two jobs (she's also a professional singer) and she needs more time to plan her wedding (in December). She does, however, have enough time to tutor a few students part time in or near San Jose in the afternoons or late mornings. Susana is a really great teacher. She's a native Costa Rican Spanish speaker plus she speaks English fairly well and thus is also able to explain grammatical concepts and other things to beginners in English if necessary. She has a lot of experience teaching Spanish to native English speakers and thus has a good understanding of what sort of things we tend to struggle with and how to explain

WiFi Hotspot SJO Airport San Jose Costa Rica

I was surprised by the sign announcing the wifi hotspot at the San Jose International Airport. It bragged that it was free, what more could you ask for? And, after you get past the noxious registration it's free and works great. They claim to have support in all the terminals. Unfortunately there is a lack of electrical outlets so you'll be limited to your battery life time. I tested download speeds of just over 200k and upload was around 80k. I just did a one time test for the hour it seemed to perform well. Why hasn't that been promoted all over the place?

Colombian Take Over of Costa Rica

Its subtle and effective. Costa Rica is a culture that has lost its identity. Overwhlemed with the influx of refugees from Nicaguara, Costa Rica has become a cesspool of petty crime and lazyness. Just as the American's let the Mexican's do their melabor.. the Costa Rican's let the Nicaguarans do the same. It is above Costa Ricans to pick coffee now that they have someone who will do it for half the cost. That attitude unfortunately breeds contempt, lazyness and an way of life that rests on waiting for someone to take advantage of. There is another influx in Costa Rica -- Colombians. Now you need to get past your thoughts of drug dealers and war. The Colombians bring a completely different culture than has been found in Costa Rica or

Surfing Costa Rica's Pacific coast

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is fast becoming one of the hippest spots on the backpack merry-go-round. It's a surfer's paradise in Central America's most laid-back holiday spot. Areas such as the Nicoya peninsula and Dominical further to the south are the real hotspots where the beaches are sublime and trees and rocks tumble down to meet the fine, white sand - Costa Rica has a reputation for its magnificent flora and fauna and there's nothing to be disappointed about on that score here. Pelicans and frigate birds wheel overhead as the booming calls of howler monkeys resound from the nearby rainforests. For those not satisfied by the ocean alone there are also numerous hikes in the region and due to Costa Rica's relatively small size you are never far away from the eco-tourism centres further inland.
